Studies have found that aerobic exercise can help middle-aged and elderly people win in the “battle of weight loss”.

The findings were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. For various physiological reasons, the body’s daily caloric requirements begin to decrease as soon as midlife is reached. Without a corresponding reduction in dietary calorie intake, the body begins to gain weight.

To study whether exercise could combat weight-gain trends, the researchers put 32 office workers over the age of 46 on a six-month period of regular aerobic exercise. The study reported that thin office workers had an 8 percent increase in their daily caloric needs after exercising. The caloric needs of obese office workers increased by 5%.
